Doughiska Schools, Co. Galway

Part of the Third bundle of PPP schools, Doughiska Schools – primary and secondary - are to be co-located in suburban Galway, making an opportunity to establish a meaningful urban and community heart to a scattered tundra of new development. The amorphous site (houses, fences, parkland) is structured by 'strips' (landscape, tarmac, play area). The two schools, scaled appropriate to their small (and smaller) users, sit across this frame, brick facades facing one another across a central nature garden which will work as a teaching resource and recreation area for students of all ages, enhancing the sense of place in the area.

Both buildings, one larger, one smaller, have undulating roof forms and varied openings. Both are punctured allowing for views, communication between levels and constant orientation to the landscape beyond.
