Temple Road Dublin

Temple Road This competition proposal for six single- family houses on a U shaped wooded site in Dublin's inner suburbs presented a total environmental solution to 21st century living. Every tree was retained, new trees were planted; the houses were designed to fold and bend in plan and section around roots and trunks- developing their own twisting dance of grass roofs and timber walls in the process, reflecting, in addition, a careful appreciation of the original Victorian house.

The houses form themselves around courts for family use, social space with covered areas to allow an outside life to continue in the Irish climate. Dual aspect kitchen and living spaces increase natural daylight and passive solar gain. Sustainable strategies mitigate environmental impact, addressing energy and water conservation, material selection, internal environmental quality and ecology. The sedum roof adds thermal benefits and a potential natural habitat, reducing the ecological impact and filtering pollutants from rain water.
