Architecture is about building original ideas - not recycling and easy soundbites. So much 21st century architecture is repetitive internet-based copying. There is an urgent need for a focus on fresh ideas at any scale.
Architecture remains focused on the evolving needs of individuals and communities. It’s about being open-minded and generous in spirit - making spaces for people, thinking intelligently about human space for living/working/thinking in specific climates and cultures.
The practice is open to positive collaboration at all levels. Discussion and engagement with others enriches the work. Collaboration occurs within the practice, with clients and consultants, as well as with artists, architects and many others throughout the process.
McCullough Mulvin Architects wishes to remain locally based in Dublin and Ireland yet open to the world - global/local in a real sense. The way of exchange between people in Ireland - a form of open listening - and experience gained in looking closely and quietly at things - even at a small level - can help to make ordinary, real and beautiful things.
The practice continues to think about the work it does through debate and positive critique, but also through researching the context of work. We extend our practice through writing, film-making and competitions, exploring themes which inform the architecture. This is about a second eye - a second commentary on the place we build in, a second eye on what we do.
The practice is concerned with PLACE and TIME. We work with concepts of geography, building in real landscape or making forms which reflect Nature, responding to contexts whether they are existing buildings, an open field or a city - from moss on a tree to a grand mountain view. We try to understand the value of history and culture, believing they can and should be incorporated into a layered response in new architecture. This is true of all work, but has a particular resonance in the reflective duality of interventive projects combining new forms with old buildings.
Social, economic and environmental sustainability is fundamental to all of our work. We are delivering LEED/ BREEAM/ NZEB projects in Ireland and internationally. The innovative design solutions generated by the climate/ cultural context, informs the architectural expression and contributes to improving peoples well-being.
