The Montpelier Project

Infirmary Road Community Centre

The Montpelier Project, which has been granted planning permission, aims to revitalise the Former Isolation Hospital buildings and site on Infirmary Road to create flexible community spaces, finding a totally appropriate contemporary use for these historic buildings.

The form and extent of the current buildings will be maintained, extending the East and West blocks with small winter gardens to enhance their use as community facilities. These will be used for classes, meetings, after-school clubs, games, workshops, etc. The largest block is proposed as the anchor facility, housing reception, flexible spaces for (e.g.) senior citizens, self-help groups, community functions, information hub, etc. The smallest building to the north is proposed as a kitchen/café location, with inside seating and an outside terrace. This block will signal the new role of the whole complex with a taller shaped roof and roof light, visible from Montpelier Gardens, acting as a beacon for the whole community.
