Niall McCullough and Ruth O'Herlihy at Saul Katowice Conference 24th-26th Sept 2020

Niall McCullough and Ruth O'Herlihy will be speaking as part of the Saul Katowice Second International and Interdisciplinary Conference on Senses in Architecture, Urban Landscaping and Design. The conference will take place online , on 24-26 September 2020. The title of their talk is Doubling Up Densifying meaning and fabric in small European cities:

It is seldom that the same architects get an opportunity to work on adjacent buildings which have a different form, with similar histories, but varied functions. The lecture consists of a description of two projects in a small Irish city, Kilkenny – St. Mary’s Medieval Mile Museum and the Butler Gallery. Both are ‘new-old’, combining new architecture with old rooms and materials. One is an art gallery, the other a museum - one a church, the other an almshouse. The work raises questions about 21st century use of existing resources for cultural use, about ways that radical but intelligent transformations - and careful consideration of proximity - can add density to architecture.
